At
the age of fifteen, Larry Clifford became interested in fine woodworking
and carving. Starting an animal training career in 1963 left little free
time, so his hobby was put on hold for over 25 years.
His far ranging career
has taken him to Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and other well know parks.
While at Sea World, Larry trained a variety of marine mammals such as sea
lions, elephant seals and walrus. His work included the opportunity to
train and perform in shows with the original SHAMU the killer
whale. Another famous animal Larry worked with was Flipper.
After retiring from his television show, he could be found with Larry at
the Miami Dolphins football games, where Flipper was the half time STAR!
Larry's movie and TV credits include training the dolphins for Dr.
Doolittle
and Danny and the Mermaid. Larry has been seen on numerous
television shows with animals he has trained. In 1990 he had his own television
show featuring zoo animals.
In 1991, almost three
decades after the start of his career, Larry formed his current company
that provides exotic animal education programs for children of all ages.
Exotic Parrot care and Training Workshops are also offered.
Larry met John Fairfield
(master woodcarver, sculptor) while working at the San Diego Zoo. John
became Larry's mentor in 1992 while working with him on a killer whale
woodcarving. Later, with John's encouragement, Larry started sculpting
this series of collectable Marine Mammal. Working closely with marine mammals
has given Larry a unique ability to capture the grace, beauty and strength
of these animals. This is reflected in the detail and the life like appearance
of each sculpture.
