Woodland Park Zoo opens new flamingo exhibit on May 24
– Celebration on opening day –

WHAT: Woodland Park Zoo is going bright pink with a new flamingo exhibit presented by The Boeing Company. The exhibit opens May 24 with opening day festivities including complimentary pink mini-cupcakes by Cupcake Royale (while supplies last), live South American music, flamingo-themed giveaways, flamingo programs, and kids’ crafts and activities.

The new exhibit will open with a flock of more than 25 Chilean flamingos and offer a snapshot into the natural world of the hardy, social birds of South America. Interactive features will allow kids to play and learn, exploring life-sized Chilean “flamingo nests,” simulated child-proof eggs, and a bas relief-sculpture of a flamingo head and neck to touch and see how flamingos eat.

WHEN: Grand opening: Saturday, May 24

Opening festivities: 9:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

WHERE: Opening festivities take place at the new flamingo exhibit near the West Entrance at N. 55th St. & Phinney Ave. N. Other zoo entries: South Entrance at N. 50th St. & Fremont Ave. N. or North Entrance off N. 59th St. & Phinney Ave. N.

COST: The flamingo exhibit and activities are free with zoo admission. Admission: May 1-September 30: Adult (13-64) $15.00; Child (3-12) $10.00; Toddler (0-2) free. Seniors and people with disabilities receive a discount and zoo members receive free zoo admission year round. Parking: $4.50. Consider taking the bus, biking, walking or carpooling. INFO: Chilean flamingos stand an impressive 40 to 42 inches tall. This species lives in South America in habitats ranging from lowland saline estuaries along the Chilean coast to high altitude alkaline lakes in the Andes. The new exhibit will mimic the coastal salt marshes and estuaries of the temperate forest zone of Chile, specifically the island of Chiloé where flamingos find winter refuge.
