For those students who are interested in learning more about careers working with animals, we are offering a look at a variety of different skills needed to prepare for such a career. The classes will include an introduction to live animals, interactive activities, tours and lab work.

One of Staten Island Zoo’s most loved programs. Join us for a tour of our animal kitchen, help prepare some food for critters and watch them eat. Meet some animals close up and have a breakfast snack while you are here.

Join dinosaur enthusiast, Richie Mirissis, as he presents some amazing fossils, three- dimensional models, and memorabilia from his vast collection. Make a clay fossil mold with the help of our knowledgeable volunteers.

HEALING WORKSHOP – Sat., Jan. 17 10:30-2:00pm (1/2 hr. lunch)
Back by popular demand: Harness your energy allowing your body to naturally heal itself. This workshop gives you powerful techniques to release stress and build up energy. Learn how to use pressure points (not only on yourself but your pet also) and meditation to release mental and physical stress. Instructor, Joe Rubino, will guide the class as you learn to heal mind and body.

GROUNDHOG DAY CELEBRATION – Mon., Feb. 2 – Gates open 7am, Chuck’s prediction is at 7:30am
Will we have a short winter or will it be another six weeks until Spring? Be there when Staten Island Chuck, New York City’s only weather forecasting groundhog, will make his grand prediction. Join us for music and fun and greet the hog himself. Chuck will also be making appearances throughout the day.
The Ceremony is a free event.

As in the past, New York City is in a terrible shortage and your help is needed. Come to the Zoo on Sat., Feb 2, give blood and help save a life. Pre-register to speed up the process! Come to the zoo on Valentine’s day to find out how “love is in the air” for some wild beasts. There will be an opportunity to make a free valentine craft for a loved one. Show your love for the zoo…for $5 you can pose with one of our education animals while we take your picture.

Enjoy an afternoon making fun toys for our Meerkats and learn what makes them “frisky”! Make a craft for yourself, too!

GONE FISHING – Sun., Feb 22 thru Sun., March 8 (see specific dates) – 10:00-11:30am
Remember how nice it was to fish on those lazy days of summer? This series of classes is a primer on fishing in Staten Island. Step-by-step you will learn about our local fish, the art of fishing, the places to fish legally and local fishing laws. This series will culminate with a fishing trip to one of the local parks at a later date.
Purchasing fishing equipment will the responsibility of the participants.
This program is geared to 6 and older accompanied by an adult.

Membership Registration Day for Zoo Summer Camp is Saturday, March 29, 2008. Registration will begin promptly at 9:00am at the Clove Road Gate.
WE WILL NOT BE TAKING NEW OR RENEWAL MEMBERSHIPS ON REGISTRATION DAY.
All those registering children for camp MUST HAVE ZOO REGISTRATION UP TO DATE BY FRIDAY, March 21 or they will not be able to register any children for camp. Members may register the children of one additional member family and no more.
