Zoo’s New “Flamingo Lagoon” Promoted With Flockings

Nashville Zoo’s highly anticipated new habitat, “Flamingo Lagoon” featuring 30 Caribbean flamingos opens to the public on Friday, Aug. 27. Leading up to that opening, the Nashville community will have a chance to see flamingos in various lawns across Middle Tennessee.
Flamingo Lagoon, sponsored by The Memorial Foundation, is a 15,000 sq. ft. oasis of lush greens and winding waterways. Located next to Critter Encounters, the new habitat features a 22,000-gallon pool, shaded areas and exotic landscaping. Guests can venture over two bridges (one is a suspension bridge) that offer unique and up-close views of the birds and habitat. The exhibit also includes behind-the-scenes flamingo housing and a recirculating filtration system that improves water quality and saves water for the habitat.
To celebrate the opening of Flamingo Lagoon, the Zoo is offering Middle Tennesseans the ability to “Flock Your Friends” during the month of August. For a fee of $100, the Zoo Flocking Crew will plant 20 pink plastic flamingos on any lawn within 30 miles of Nashville Zoo to roost for approximately 24 hours. Anti-Flocking insurance is also available for $100 for those who do not wish to be visited by the birds.
To insure that flocking goes off without a hitch, the following rules apply:

  • Flamingo flocking should be done with good intentions and should never be malicious
  • Select a 'victim' that is good natured and has a sense of humor
  • Please ensure the Zoo Flocking Crew can easily arrange access into the area for both delivery and pick-up. Dogs must be kept indoors
  • The Zoo wants the fundraiser to be fun and safe for all, including the precious but tacky pink flamingos

To order a flocking, visit www.nashvillezoo.org, email flamingo@nashvillezoo.org or call the Hot Pink Hotline at 615-833-1534 ext. 307.
