Melbourne, FL—Brevard Zoo has posted its 2009 calendar of public Night Hikes and Overnight Zoo Safaris at brevardzoo.org. These unique, nighttime experiences are a great way for children to experience, only at night, the wildest place in the county. These nighttime experiences are open to the public, but reservations are required. In addition, groups of 10 or more can schedule one, with a minimum of two weeks notice. Public Overnight Zoo Safaris start off with games and animal encounters. Upon arrival, campers participate in hands-on activities and an animal presentation. Then campers take a quick break to refuel before braving the unknown on a flashlight safari. After a good night sleep, campers wake to the sounds of the zoo at daybreak and enjoy a continental breakfast. Each adventure begins at 6 p.m. and ends the following morning at 9 a.m.
Public Overnight dates are February 21, April 18, September 26, and October 10. These overnights are recommended for children ages seven to 12. Cost is $35 for members and $40 for non-members. For February 21, the theme is Investigators, where the kids will trek through the zoo and solve a mystery. For April 18 and September 26, the theme is Tricky Tracks, where kids will discover the similarities and differences in animal feet. Finally, on October 10, the theme is Things That Go Bump in ihe Night, where kids come and meet the zoo’s creepy, crawly friends.
The zoo also invites the public to attend Public Night Hikes. This is a shortened version of the public overnights and includes a guided flashlight safari through the zoo, crafts, games, and a hands-on animal presentation. Public Night Hikes run from 5 to 9 p.m. and are recommended for children ages five to 12. Cost is $24 for members and $25 for non-members. Public Night Hike dates are March 21, May 23, and November 14. On March 21 and November 14, the theme is World Wide Food Web, where children discover the different predator and prey relationships. On May 23, the theme is Investigators, where children trek through the zoo solving a mystery.
The zoo will also offer special public night hikes in June, July, and August to coincide with Summer Saturday Nights, as well as a special New Year’s Eve overnight.
